How We Install Solar Panels & Considerations
Mr Solar has experiance in several roof types and each system is different but the mechanism is the mostly the same except for in-roof (Inset) or flat roofs which we have perfect solutions for.
Roof Types
Metal Roofs: Metal roofs are also suitable for solar panels. The installation process may involve drilling into the metal panels to secure the mounting system.
Slate Roofs: Slate roofs are similar to tile roofs in terms of installation complexity. Drilling into slate not advisable, so special mounting systems will be required and slips are used for water tightness.
Flat Roofs: Flat roofs can also accommodate solar panels, but they require a different type of mounting system that creates a slight angle to optimise sunlight absorption.
Standard Concrete Or Clay Roof tiles: These roofs are normally very easy to install on and follow a simple construction.
Roof Condition

If your roof requires repairs or maintenance, it’s best to address those issues before installing solar panels. This will ensure a long-lasting and efficient solar system.
1. Planning and Preparation:
Assess Your Roof: Ensure it’s structurally sound and suitable for solar panels. Consider factors like pitch, orientation, and shading. Optimal Pitch: The ideal pitch for solar panels is between 15 and 30 degrees. This angle allows for maximum sunlight absorption throughout the year, however the angle does not fall significantly below or above the ideal.
2,Determine System Size:
Calculate your energy needs and select the appropriate number of solar panels, if you use 4,000kwh per year you will need 4.5kw or 10 x 450w Solar panels as a simple calculation with battery storage at about 5-10kw.
Obtain Permits If Needed
Check local regulations and obtain necessary permits, most systems are pre approved under permitted development rights (PDR). If you live in a conservation area, ANOB or listed property you will need to check with the local council or authority and gain written permission.
Mr Solar, Installing the Mounting System:

Secure Mounts to rafters: Attach the mounting system to your roof, following manufacturer instructions. Ensure it’s securely fastened and levelled.
.
Install the Solar Panels:
Attach Panels: Carefully lift and attach the solar panels to the mounting system, securing them with bolts and or clamps.
Options to consider,
- Bird Guards, this will stop birds nesting in the underside of the panels which can cause substantial damage to the system. Mr Solar always recommends these as we have seen the damage caused and the costs involved with removing the system and repairing the damage.
- Solar PV Panel Optimisers, If you get shading on the roof optimisers will bypass the shading and will keep all the panels generating at there peak performance, without this all the panels would be reduced in power if just one panel was shaded.
Connect Wiring:

Connect the solar panels together using MC4 connectors ensuring they are clean and dry.
4. Install the Inverter:
Choose Location: Select a suitable location for the inverter, usually indoors or more modern inverters with a IP65+ rating outside with or without a battery.
5. Connect to the Electrical System:
Connect AC Output: Connect the AC output of the inverter to your home’s electrical panel commonly called a fuse board or consumer board.
