FAQs
Solar panels offer several advantages. They can significantly reduce your electricity bill by allowing you to generate your own energy from sunlight. This is especially beneficial during daylight hours when electricity demand is highest. If you also install a battery, you can store excess electricity for use at night, further reducing reliance on the grid. You may also receive payments for surplus electricity exported to the grid under the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG).
No. Solar panel technology has improved significantly in recent years, making them more efficient and affordable than ever before. Modern panels can generate energy even on cloudy days, thanks to increased efficiency. Over the past decade, panel output has increased from around 250W to 500W.
In addition, dual-sided (bifacial) panels are now available. These capture sunlight from both the front and rear surfaces, increasing energy generation compared to traditional front-only panels.
The size of the solar panel system and battery storage you need depends on several factors, including your energy consumption, available installation space, and geographic location.
At Mr Solar, we assess your past energy usage and ask whether you expect your needs to increase. Based on this, we can recommend a system tailored to your requirements. If you’re also interested in earning from excess energy generation, we can explore a larger Solar PV system that allows for greater export to the grid.
The cost of a solar panel and battery storage system varies depending on factors such as system size, battery type and capacity, and installation complexity.
Mr Solar can provide a general cost breakdown covering initial outlay, expected operational savings, and estimated payback period. Many customers request two or three options for comparison, which we are happy to provide.
Our systems start at £3,000 for solar panels only. With battery storage included, prices begin at £4,695. Costs benefit from economies of scale—the larger the system, the more value you can realise.
The most common method is roof mounting using a lightweight aluminium frame. Brackets and rails are secured to the roof rafters to support the panels. The angle and orientation of the panels are key to maximising solar exposure.
If your roof space is unsuitable or insufficient, ground-mounted systems are an option. These are often easier to install but require more space and tend to be more expensive.
Mr Solar will provide all necessary documentation for you to apply for payments under the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG), which is paid by your energy supplier (e.g. British Gas or Octopus, both of whom offer competitive solar tariffs).
Following installation, we issue the MCS certificate, which confirms that your system meets recognised quality standards. We also provide the DNO (Distribution Network Operator) approval letter, notifying your supplier that your system is connected to the network.
Additional paperwork includes electrical circuit testing and inspection records, as well as local authority registration. All of this, along with the customer handover pack, ensures your installation is fully certified, safe, and compliant.
