Garden and balcony plug-in solar—or a complete rooftop system?

Plug-in solar can now offer a lower-cost route into generation in Great Britain. But it is smaller, must use an approved complete kit and is not automatically right for every garden, balcony or electrical installation.

This guide compares today’s plug-in systems with a professionally installed 4.5 kWp rooftop solar and battery package.

Designed and installed as an MCS rooftop system, with the inverter, storage and controls coordinated around the home’s demand. The battery helps increase solar self-use and can shift suitable off-peak electricity into more expensive periods.

This is the theoretical maximum if every generated unit replaces electricity that would otherwise cost 28p/kWh. It is not a guaranteed saving.

Illustrations exclude panel degradation, maintenance, finance, tariff changes and export income. Cheap-rate winter charging can add value, but the saving is the battery energy shifted multiplied by the difference between the off-peak and daytime rates; no off-peak rate has been assumed here.

Before buying

Check the property, permissions and electrics—not just the product price.

  • Exact complete kit appears on the approved register
  • Manufacturer expressly permits the proposed location
  • Secure wind-resistant mounting and safe cable route
  • Suitable socket and electrical installation
  • Landlord, freeholder, planning and insurance checks
  • Device registered before use

When rooftop solar is likely better

  • You own the property and have a suitable roof
  • You want materially higher annual generation
  • You want approved home battery storage
  • You may want export-tariff eligibility
  • You want a designed, tested and certified installation
  • You expect higher daytime or evening consumption
