Octopus Flux

Octopus Flux is great if you have solar panels and a home battery

What it is and why it helps

Octopus Flux is a special power plan made for homes with solar panels and batteries. It gives you cheap electricity from 2:00 AM to 5:00 AM to charge your battery, and higher rates from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM when lots of people use power. This way, you can store energy when it’s cheap and use or sell it when it’s more expensive.

The smart version of Octopus Flux can connect to certain batteries like GivEnergy, Enphase, SolarEdge, or Tesla Powerwall. It can automatically manage charging and discharging your battery to save you money.

Main benefits if you have solar and a battery

  • Arbitrage: Charge your battery during the cheap early morning hours (2–5 AM) and use or sell that power in the busy evening hours (4–7 PM). This can save you more money than regular plans.
  • Automation and less hassle: The intelligent version can handle scheduling your battery, so you don’t have to do it yourself.
  • Make more money or save more, even in winter: You can still earn or save with your battery, even on days with less sun. Octopus says some people can make up to about £300 a year depending on where they live and use power.
  • Clear time slots and local prices: You can check your area’s latest Octopus Flux rates to see if it’s a good fit for you right now.

Who can use Flux?

  • You need a smart meter that records energy every half hour.
  • You must have solar panels plus a home battery.
  • Mr Solar produce official certificates MCS & DNO for your solar panels and permission from your local grid operator.
  • For the intelligent version, your battery must be one of the supported brands, and you need to connect it using its app.

When does Flux work best?

  • When you have extra solar power or can shift when you use electricity.
  • When you want to sell power during the busy evening times and buy power cheaply at night. (If you have a lot of electric vehicles, another plan like Go might suit you better.)

How to get the most out of Flux

  • Choose a battery size that can cover most of the busy 4–7 PM time.
  • Use the intelligent automation if your battery works with it.
  • Check your local rates regularly, because prices can change by area.
