Solar PV Maintenance & Aftercare

Solar PV panels require very little maintenance to continue working efficiently and producing energy for your home. The most common maintenance requirement is occasional cleaning. Over time, dirt, dust, and debris can build up on the panels, particularly after storms or during long dry periods. Cleaning helps ensure the panels receive the maximum amount of sunlight and perform at their best.

It’s also a good idea to regularly check your generation meter and keep simple records of your system’s performance. If you notice any unexpected outages or significantly lower generation than usual for the time of year, this could indicate that something isn’t operating correctly.

Solar panels are supplied with manufacturer warranties, which typically range from 10 to 25 years. These warranties guarantee that the panels will continue to operate above a specified performance level over their lifetime.

For a high-quality, MCS-accredited Solar PV installation, a system service is generally recommended after 5–10 years. However, if you notice that your system is not producing energy or that output has dropped significantly, please contact Mr Solar straight away.

Solar PV Maintenance – FAQs

Do solar panels need regular maintenance?

Solar panels require very little maintenance. In most cases, occasional visual checks and periodic cleaning are enough to keep them operating efficiently.

How often should solar panels be cleaned?

Panels usually only need cleaning every 1–2 years, or sooner if there is visible dirt, debris, or bird droppings. Heavy rain often cleans panels naturally, but long dry periods or nearby trees can increase the need for cleaning.

Can I clean my solar panels myself?

Yes, ground-mounted or easily accessible panels can be cleaned using water and a soft brush. For roof-mounted systems, we recommend using a professional cleaning service to avoid safety risks and potential damage.

How do I know if my system is working correctly?

You can monitor performance by:

  • Checking your generation meter or monitoring app

  • Comparing current output with previous months or the same time last year

If you notice unusually low generation or no output at all, this may indicate a fault.

What should I do if my solar production drops?

If your system is producing significantly less energy than expected for the time of year, or has stopped producing altogether, please contact Mr Solar so we can investigate.

Do solar panels come with a warranty?

Yes. Solar panels are supplied with manufacturer warranties, typically:

  • Product warranty: 10–20 years

  • Performance warranty: up to 25 years

Performance warranties guarantee that the panels will not fall below a specified output level over time.

Does my solar PV system need servicing?

A well-installed, MCS-accredited Solar PV system generally does not require frequent servicing. However, a system check is recommended after 5–10 years, or sooner if performance issues arise.

What is included in a system service?

A typical service includes: £195

  • Electrical safety checks

  • Inverter and battery inspection (if applicable)

  • Performance review

  • Visual inspection of panels and mounting system
