How Long Do Solar Panels Last?
Quality panels are designed to generate for decades, with output reducing gradually over time. The complete solar system also contains inverters, isolators, protection and monitoring equipment that may need service or replacement sooner.
Lifespan, warranty and guaranteed output are not the same.
Physical service life
A panel may continue operating beyond its formal warranty period if it remains electrically and mechanically sound.
Product warranty
This normally covers specified manufacturing defects under the manufacturer’s terms, exclusions and claims procedure.
Performance warranty
This promises a defined minimum percentage of original rated output over time; it is not the same as a full replacement warranty.
The inverter and electrical system deserve equal attention.
- Review monitoring for unexplained generation changes
- Investigate recurring isolation or inverter faults
- Keep ventilation and manufacturer clearances unobstructed
- Check visible cables, enclosures and mounting after severe events
- Use competent electrical testing where a fault or deterioration is suspected
- Retain model numbers, serial numbers and commissioning documents

Solar-lifespan FAQ
Does a 30-year performance warranty mean nothing can fail for 30 years?
No. It relates to stated output performance. Product, labour, access and consequential costs are governed by separate terms.
When should an inverter be replaced?
There is no universal date. Condition, errors, component quality, loading, heat and environment matter. Replace or repair based on diagnosis and supportability.
Can old panels be mixed with new panels?
Sometimes, but electrical characteristics, dimensions, string design and warranty implications must be assessed.
Start with a proper solar assessment.
Tell Mr Solar about your property, electricity use and future plans. We will recommend a system around the building and the way you actually use energy.
